Between the cold air outside and the dry heat indoors, your skin puts up with a lot over the winter months. The results are dry flaky skin and dull complexion. And just like you change your wardrobe to fit the weather, your skin care routine is no different.

Dullness is the result of dead skin cells building up; therefore you must exfoliate regularly during the winter months. Choose a mild exfoliate for everyday use like Repere Care’s Daily Micro exfoliating Cleanser , with its high content of prickly pear oil and  volcano bead technology, it is guaranteed to gently remove dead skin cells without drying out your skin. For a multi-purpose exfoliation session, a personal favorite is the Khiel’s cranberry and turmeric face mask, not only does the cranberry beads gently exfoliate your skin as you rinse off, the turmeric also brighten your complexion and invigorates your skin. Try it over the weekend after a night out to restore freshness.

“Exfoliating can help skin-care products penetrate 20 percent better,” says dermatologist Jeannette Graf. So tackle that dry and flaky skin by continuously moisturizing your skin. The skin is not only the biggest organ in your body; it’s your first defense against the weather conditions outside. It makes sense then, that it would be the most affected by weather changes.

Moisturize regularly

“Moisturizer doesn’t just add water back into your skin, it also traps in the water your already have to plump it up and protect it” says Dr Mona Goharan, a dermatologist at Yale University.

Moisturizing also reduces the occurrence of other skin problems. Using the right kind of moisturizer for your skin can help maintain its balance. When the skin is not balanced i.e too oily or too dry, many common skin problems occur such as acne and extreme dryness and peeling. According to dermatologist Dr. Ted Lain, if have oily skin, opt for  lotions or lightweight creams , instead of heavy creams. and try to find a moisturizer with an exfoliant ingredient. If on the other hand you have dry skin, look for a cream – they tend to have a higher oil content. Try Repere Care’s Daily Repair Moisturizer, formulated with a high concentration of vitamin E and prickly pear seed oil, not only does it moisturize but it absorbs fast into the skin leaving it soft with no greasy residue. It also has a high content of Linoleic acid, which means it will not clog pores or cause breakouts. Prickly Pear Oil products are slowly making their way into the beauty market and from what I have seen, they are here to stay.

Another favorite would be a monthly or by-monthly session of Micro-dermabrasion. This is not your regular facial, rather micro-dermabrasion, penetrates deeper to remove dead skin cells, promote cell turn over and allow your products to penetrate deeper into the epidermis for maximum benefits. The procedure can take up to 45 min depending on the nature of the facial you get after.

It is ideal for acne scars, dark spots caused by the sun. It’s generally for all skin types and there is no down time, but your skin may get red or pink for a few hours before settling. Most procedures are accompanied by a facial and a hydrating session with multi-vitamin serums and creams to maximize the benefits and to give you an amazing glow for day !!

In microdermabrasion, tiny crystals are sprayed onto the skin to gently remove the outer layer of your skin. This technique is less aggressive than dermabrasion, so you don’t need numbing medicine. It is basically an exfoliation and skin rejuvenation procedure that leaves skin looking softer and brighter.

The winter months maybe be harsh and sticking to a skin care routine is a great way to protect your skin, but don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids as this helps your skin from the inside.

I will soon be reviewing different clinics around Dubai to find you the best Mirco-dermabrasion session out there, so stay tuned !
